GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 6:00.
And that was pushing it today.
I woke up in pain--not as bad as my first few days of walking, but bad.
I worked for a few hours, then took what I thought would be a reasonable nap.
Six hour later, my husband woke me up so we could figure out dinner.
This is progress, right?!
Right?!?!?!?!?
Walking for less than 15 minutes should NOT be this hard. People around the world are facing much more difficult challenges. Most of them don't have trouble doing something as basic as walking.
And this line of thinking is not helping me feel any better or be more motivated.
Someone tell me this whole situation gets better...

Day 20: Wahhh
. . . HOO!!! YIPPEE!!! HOORAY!!!
For the first time since starting this blog, I beat my initial walking time!!! I walked for 0.2 miles for 12:41!!!
At last, something worth celebrating!!!
And here I though I was going to be stuck in the middle, not making much progress, for-ev-er!
And, literally NOTHING indicated that I would be able to do any better. Then, BAM!!!
Tonight, I was so frustrated. I started hurting at 1:37, and then I got mad about that.
My husband was running boring raft races on Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I just kept telling myself, " You can hang in there until the end of this race. . . . You can hang in there until the end of this race. . . ."
And so I did.

Day 19: Middle
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 7:48.
Here I am, in the middle of the daily grind.
The pain isn't as bad. Walking isn't as bad. I'm not as bad at exercising.
The speed is slightly better (1.2 instead of 1.1). The average time per day is slightly better. I'm feeling slightly better.
Yet, I'm nowhere near where I want or need to be.
I'm just... in the middle.

Day 18: Cats
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 6:43.
An adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical CATS is planned for release on December 20.
Not sure what to think of it.
The trippy plot defies pretty much all logic.
Hope the big-name actors don't make as big of a mess of it as the bulk of them did with the recent version of Les Miserables. And Mama Mia!.
I just about went off on a tangent about that, but I realized that I'd be digressing.
Anyway, cats. My mom has two of them.
Well, maybe, 2.5.
Okay, 3.
She never really liked animals. Then, one day, she got a cat.
Or, more precisely, the cat got her.
But you know what the cat's really got?
My tongue.
Because I don't know what to say about my exercise.

GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 7:01.
When we went on a dinner date this evening, I was thinking about how slowly I was moving,
BUT
before I could say anything,
my husband commented that I seemed to be walking at a faster clip than last week.
That'll put a spring in my step and a smile on my face again.

Day 16: Hints
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 7:08.
Not as long as yesterday.
However, rather than continuing to deteriorate, I am seeing hints of progress.
Though I have difficulty getting up in the morning, the aches and pains are duller, more tolerable, somehow more manageable.
My average walking times are increasing.
Recovery from exercise is a tad quicker.
I can navigate flights of stairs with greater ease.
I can haul multiple items--not just myself.
I can help pack and unpack the car.
My overall mood is lighter.
My mind is more awake, alert, and active,
which means shutting down for sleep is more difficult.
Insomnia is becoming a problem.
Again.
But
--and here's the kicker--
I can survive with lower sleep
WITHOUT
losing my sanity.
As I said, hints . . .
of progress.
I'll take 'em.

Day 15: Stop
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 9:24.
Today, I was practically delirious when I started walking.
(Reason: Another member of my family got on the treadmill around 10:00 p.m., right when I arrived home and wanted to get on it. I could literally hear the rapid serious of beeps indicating the start of the treadmill right as I walked in the house. She knew I needed to exercise, too, and she'd been home for HOURS before I was. Then, she FINISHED WATCHING THE REST OF THE MOVIE after the 45 minutes walking, which meant I couldn't get on the machine for almost 2 hours!!! So frustrating!!! Especially since we were exhausted from traveling over the weekend. Also, everything is worse because I'm tired.)
Needless to say, when I accidentally hit the emergency STOP button at 03:26 into my walk and couldn't resume my stats, I about lost my already fragile grip on my emotions.
Luckily, my husband was willing to text me those stats, and I restarted the treadmill from scratch.
I walked an additional 5:58 and finished my longest walk to date since Day 1.
Stop the presses, folks, we may actually be making some progress.

Day 14: Thinking
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 5:21.
Tonight, we watched the most masterful production of Hamlet I have ever seen and probably ever will see. (Kudos to Quinn Mattfeld for his brilliant, revelatory rendition and to the rest of the cast and crew.)
I do my own share of second-guessing, getting caught up in my head, procrastinating when I should act, wondering whether it's all worth it, thinking...
It's paralyzing.
I also wonder what I'm going to do when I travel somewhere that doesn't have a treadmill. Can I count the walking itself, because that's the ultimate goal, or do I literally count only the stepping on the treadmill? What right, honest, reasonable...?
"...for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."
(Not sure I quite agree with "nothing," but definitely with most things...)
Still pondering the practicalities for how to handle the goal when it's truly not achievable, because I don't want that to become a derailer.
Open to ideas...
As for today, I stepped on the treadmill at the hotel.
But, I did my walking at the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

Day 13: Motivation
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 5:14.
I did not want to step on the treadmill today. I did not want to walk today. Nothing about either of those things appealed to me.
I did them anyway.
I wanted to stop at 1:27.
I didn't.
At 3:36, I kept asking myself, "Are we there yet?"
Every step was a drudgery.
At 5:14, I finally stopped.
You know why?
Well, to be honest, because the number of miles read 0.1.
I guilted, shamed, cajoled, wheedled, bribed, and pulled out all the rest of my mental and emotional bag of tricks to just make it to 0.1 miles. I already feel pathetic. I wanted to avoid the black hole of failing to make that milestone.
So I draaaaaaaaagged every part of my spirit, mind, and body through EVERY. SINGLE. STEP.
I thought I'd NEVER finish...
I remembered having a conversation with a friend (different friend from earlier posts, if you must know) about the difference between motivation and determination.
People who work on their goals only when they feel motivated shortchange themselves--they work on their goals less than half the time they could.
People who are determined work on their goals nearly ALL the time.
Today, I definitely was NOT motivated.
Jury's still out on how determined I am.

STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 5:16.

I worked 14 hours.
I stayed up too late.

So, I cried, like, a *bazillion* times. (Bazillion--that's a technical term.)
I'm just not up to much that's ambitious right now.

Day 11: Yo-Yo
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 8:14.
Yo, whattup homies??
Hey, hey, word play... Though that wasn't the "yo" I originally had in mind. Just a riff.
Or maybe a wiff.
"Stop it, I mean it."
"Anybody want a peanut?"
(Movie reference anyone??)
But, I digress.
Nevertheless...
I seriously need to get back on topic.
But, maybe I never was on topic, and therefore that is the topic, and thus going off topic is not going off topic at all...
Okay, okay.
Let's get down to business, and defeat the . . . PUNS! (Another movie reference . . . ?)
(And, true confession: technically, that's a word play, not a pun.)
Alright, alright, alright... (Yet another movie reference?! . . . Apparently, I need help. . .. )
ANYWAY . . .
I'm procrastinating.
Last night--ray of sunshine, beacon of hope.
Subsumed by . . .
This morning--all encompassing black abyss of misery and endless woe.
COULD NOT MOVE.
Could not wake up. Could not get out of bed. Could not think. Could not walk. Could not. . . .
Yet, somehow, did all of those things. Not very well, but did them.
And worked a full day.
And walked longer tonight.
Who knows what tomorrow brings?? (Song reference??)
Regret?
Or Satisfaction? (As in . . . I can't get no . . .)
Optimism?
Or Dispair?
Pain?
Or Pride?
Or maybe all of the above.
I get knocked down, but I get up again... (Oh, come on. I couldn't help myself.)

Day 10: Signs
GOAL: STEP ON THE TREADMILL
STATUS: COMPLETE
I walked for 0.1 miles for 7:16.
Today, as we headed toward the freeway, we saw two advertisements for health product companies with similar images of lush lavender fields, obviously competing for market supremacy. They leverage the potent images of nature to offer viewers an ideal vision of attaining health naturally, via their supplements.
Like those seemingly innocuous signs warring for domination of public investment, the twin combatants for my personal investment are sleep and exercise.
For many folks, the two work together.
For me, they are locked in a bloody battle to the death.
The more I exercise, the more I need sleep to recover, the less I am able to sleep because my mind is alert and my body is in pain. The more sleep I get, the more my body heals, the more lethargic I feel, and the less I want to exercise.
Add in a dash of iron-deficiency anemia and lack of sunlight, and all signs point to unmitigated disaster.
All signs, that is, except one.
Today, I walked for longer than I did on any one of the previous eight days.
The day that I surpass my Day 1 time?
Well, that will be worthy of celebration...
